Biodiversity holds immense importance at every scale, from my backyard to the entire planet. In the immediate space of Weyanoke Bird & Wildflower Sanctuary, biodiversity is allowing for essential ecosystem services, such as pollination, water treatment, and soil decomposition. It also helps to maintain balance in the ecosystem, keeping vital wetland grasses alive for flood control. Within the coastal Virginia region, broader United States, and world as a whole, biodiversity is crucial for human survival. Biodiversity helps to sustain ecosystems that provide food for us to eat. It keeps fisheries in balance and stabilizes ocean food chains. It is of critical importance to protect the variety of plants for us to eat. Humans also rely on biodiversity to keep natural resources that we harness in stable condition.
